I have played Yu-Gi-Oh! Since the first pack showed up in USA. I still have my first LOB’s Blue Eyes White Dragon card. I have collected well over 6,000 cards since and have all 3 USA Duel Disks.
I have seen all series of Yu-Gi-Oh! Including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5DS and now Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Many threaten to stop once GX happened, some stayed however. The threat returned when they saw dueling on motorcycles and Synchros. Now many are really freaking out over Zexal. The age group for Zaxel is clearly not the same as 5DS. I for one is loving Zaxel and can’t wait to try the new monster type, Exseed.
I am a girl duelist and way too old for the series or cards but I doubt I’ll ever truelly get out of Yu-Gi-Oh!.

I like the cards from all of them. 
If somebody's in it for the card game itself, I don't get why they would give up playing altogether just because they don't like the show. My only complaint: there aren't enough lower level normal monsters anymore, like Mushroom Man, Needle Worm, Skull Servant, and such. I mean, yeah, those cards might be useless, but I liked them. 
But that's just my opinion...
As for the animes/mangas, of course I liked the first one. I was a bit skeptical of GX at first (I figured, how can there be a sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh?), but I grew to like it. Oddly enough, that's my favorite series now. The whole hero thing resonated well with me.
It had a Marvel feel to it. I only watched the first season of 5D's (though I *may* attempt to finish that one at some point) and the first one or two episodes of Zexal.
